Layfield, Malcolm, 1952-

Violinist and conductor Malcolm Layfield studied at the Royal Scottish Academy of Music and Drama with Roger Raphael and at the Royal Northern College of Music with Polish/American violinist Bronislaw Gimpel.  In 1982 he founded the Goldberg Ensemble. He was leader of the London Bach Orchestra and has appeared as guest leader and soloist with many orchestras across the UK.  Malcolm Layfield was a violin teacher at Chetham's School of Music and Head of Strings at the Royal Northern College of Music in Manchester where he also worked with the RNCM Chamber Orchestra and String Orchestra.  He was programme director of the Strathclyde University Festival of Music and was appointed Director of the Ryedale Festival in 1995.  Malcolm Layfield plays on a Gennaro Cagliano violin of 1768.
