Hargitt, C.J. 1833-1918

Charles John Hargitt b. Edinburgh 1833, organist at St Mary's Roman Catholic Cathedral, Edinburgh, composer and conductor.
Studied under his father, Sir Charles Halle, Sir G. A. Macfarren and Ferdinand Hiller.
Conductor of the Edinburgh Choral Union from its foundation in 1858 until 1862 when he left for London.
In London he organised the Royal Albert Choral Society of which he was also sub-conductor to M. Gounod.
d. September 1918, Tunbridge Wells, Kent

Son of Charles Hargitt (1806-1880), organist in Edinburgh for some years and who performed at the first Reid Concert in 1841.
