Professor Herbert Stanley Oakeley (1830-1903)

Portrait of Professor Herbert Stanley Oakeley (1830-1903), commissioned by Edinburgh University Musical Society, and hung in the south-west vestibule of the Reid School of Music (Reid Concert Hall).

Oakeley was elected to the Chair of Music at the University of Edinburgh on 2 November 1965 and resigned as Professor of Music in 1891 on grounds of ill health..  He established Edinburgh University Musical Society in 1867 and the Edinburgh Orchestral Festival in 1871.
