The musical culture of Manding country (the savannah belt of West Africa) has many facets, but the music of the professional drummer and it accompanying dance is among the most impressive ans virtuosic in all Africa. Its rich traditions, dating back to the great Mali Empire of the fourteenth century, combine the participatory spirit of festive celebration, spiritual ceremony and everyday life with the formal professionalism of Islamic private patronage
