Harper, Edward, 1941-2009

Edward James Harper, b. Taunton 1941; d. Edinburgh 12 April 2009

Composer, conductor and pianist. 
Proceeded from the Royal Grammar School, Guildford, to Oxford University (after a year at the R.C.M.) as Music Scholar of Christ Church.  After graduating with first class honours he took the composer's degree of B.Mus. He then returned to the Royal College of Music in London where he studied composition under Gordon Jacob, together with pianoforte study in chamber music and accompanying and work as a repetiteur to the opera class before continuing his studies in Milan with Franco Donatoni.  
Appointed lecturer in music at the University of Edinburgh Faculty of Music in 1964.
Participated in many of the concerts at the University of Edinburgh.
Director of the New Music Group of Scotland from 1973 to 1990.
