"Stabat Mater", for chorus and orchestra
Tovey writes in the Reid Concert programme, 10 March 1932: "Of the Four Sacred pices which constitute Verdi's last work, the Stabat Mater is the most important and the most perfect. The Te Deum is a little more voluminous but does not achieve the consistency of style shown in the Stabat Mater, nor is it so unquestionably beautiful in conception, though it is very impressive."
