Robert Crawford's first string quartet was written in 1949-50 and first performed at the ISCM in Frankfurt in 1951 where it was played by the Berlin String Quartet. In the same year it was awarded the Chamber Music Prize at the Scottish Arts Council's Festival of Britain competition and given its first British performance by the Aeolian String Quartet.
