Quartet for two violins, viola and violoncello, no. 1 in B flat major, op. 1, no. 1

Alternative title:
Cessation in B flat

Composed about 1750.

Note:  An article by Marion M. Scott in the Monthly Musical Record, December 1, 1931, p. 348, suggests that this work may not have been Haydn's first quartet and that op. 1 no. 1 should be a quartet in E flat - "the lost heir".   This 'lost' work was described by Haydn in his own Thematic Catalogue of 1805 as a Divertimento.     Miss Scott came upon "the lost heir" at the Royal Academy of Music in the 1785 edition of Haydn's op. 1 by Hummel of Amsterdam.  At the British Museum the same E-flat work was found in Bremner's (London) edition.  In Paris the work was published as a quartet by Huberty c. 1760.  In 1761 Huberty's business was taken over by La Chevardière who published Haydn's op. 1 without the E flat quartet and with the B flat quartet as op. 1 no. 1.
