Overture: "Academic festival", op. 80

Alternative title:
Akademisch Festouvertüre

Written by Brahms as his exercise for the Degree of Doctor of Philosophy which was conferred on him honoris causa by the University of Breslau in 1881.  The spirit of Alma Mater is manifested in the old student song "Wir haben gebauet ein stattliches Haus" and the overture ends with a solemn full orchestration of Gaudeamus igitur.    (from note by Donald Francis Tovey in the Queen's Hall concert programme of July 14th, 1931 to mark Joseph Joachim's centenary)
