The programme note for this work written by Professor Donald Francis Tovey and printed in the programme on 12 May 1917 is introduced as "A personal reminiscence". In writing the note Tovey is recalling a performance he heard in 1887 at the age of 12, given by Madame Clara Schumann at a Saturday Popular concert in St James's Hall, London.
