Beyond the Orgelbüchlein (Contemplating the chorale)

Commissioned by Philip Sawyer and received its first performance in March 1995.

Dr Peterson selected 10 chorale melodies for treatments resembling those of Bach, but filtered through her own musical language.

1. Schaut, ihr Sunder! (Behold ye Sinners)
2. Durch Adams Fall ist ganz verdebt (Adam's fall entirely corrupted by human nature)
3. Alle Menschen müssen sterben (All men must die)
4. Wer weiss, wie nahe mir mein Ende (Who knows how near my end must be)
5. Ach, dass nicht die letzte Stunde (O that my life's final hour not strike today)
6. Nicht so traurig, nicht so sehr (Not so sadly, not so deeply troubled)
7. Herzlich tut mit verlangen (I desire sincerely a blessed ending)
8. Ermuntre dich, mein schwacher Geist (Rouse thyself, my weak spirit)
9. Gottlob, es geht nunmehr zu Ende (Thank God, it is almost now over)
10. Welt, ade! ich bin dein müde (World, adieu! I am tired of thee)
