Turnbull, Michael, 1952-

Thomas Michael Turnbull received his early musical training in his native city of Durham.  In 1971 he took up an organ scholarship at Pembroke College, Oxford where he spent time playing for the University Opera Club and this led to postgraduate work on seventeenth-century French opera.  After two years teaching at St Andrews University he joined the teaching staff in the Faculty of Music at the University of Edinburgh in the late 1970s, as a Lecturer and subsequently Senior Lecturer, where was Director of the University Madrigal Group/Chamber Choir from 1979 to 1990.

He married Barbara Bell in 1980.
