Obituary of the month
It is with extreme regret that we announce the death of Mr Grant Turner McNiell, the well-known Edinburgh 'cellist. Mr McNiell is one more victim of typhoid through the supposed contamination of milk. He had barely attained his thirtieth year, but he was one one of the most respected musicians in the capital. The deceased was the son of the late Mr A. D. McNiell, the manager of the old Princess theatre. He received his early musical education in Edinburgh and completed his studies under Professor Cossmann at Frankfurt. He was a very successful teacher of the cello and as a exponent of chamber music in conjunction with other leading musicians he was widely and favourably known. Last season his playing was an outstanding feature of Professor Niecks' series of chamber quartettes at the University Music Class-Room. As a result of Mr McNiell's lamented death we hear that Herr Max Hochstein of the Scottish Orchestra is likely to settle in Edinburgh.
