Field, Christopher D. S. 1938-
b. April 1938, Surrey
Lives in St Andrews.
Honorary Fellow in the Reid School of Music, Edinburgh College of Art, University of Edinburgh (formerly School of Arts, Culture and Entertainment). He came to Edinburgh in 1987 as a senior lecturer and was Dean of the Faculty of Music, University of Edinburgh in the 1990s and previously Lecturer in Music at the University of St Andrews from 1964 to 1987. He retired in 1995.
Dr Field progressed to his Scottish academic career by what might be said to have been a classic preparatory path: Winchester College Choir School; National Service in the Intelligence Corps; a state scholarship in Classics; and a move from Classics to Music halfway through his undergraduate career at Oxford. A keen violinist with a special interest in instrumental music of the seventeenth-century, he studied with Frederick Grinke and after he came to Scotland in 1964 he was a regular member of the Scottish Early Music Ensemble.
