Royston James Durrant, MBE was born in Bournemouth . 

Professional viola player James Durrant was, from 1957 to 1964, principal viola with the Scottish National Orchestra.  Since then he has been a teacher at the Royal Scottish Academy of Music and Drama in Glasgow (now the Royal Conservatoire of Scotland).  He has been a prominent champion of Scottish composers, having commissioned, performed and broadcast numerous solo and chamber works involving the viola.
