Dolmetsch, Arnold, 1858-1940

Arnold Eugene Dolmetsch, b. Le Mans, France 1858; d. Haslemere, Surrey, 1940

French musician and instrument maker.  Studied violin in Brussels with Henri Vieuxtemps and at the Royal College of Music, London.  Music antiquarian and scholar.  Established an instrument-making workshop in Haslemere, Surrey and an early music festival.

Arnold Dolmetsch was married three times. On 28 May 1878 he married Marie Morel (a widow, ten years his senior) but was divorced in 1898. His second wife, to whom he was married on 11 September 1899, was Elodie Désirée Franche Lelong, the divorced wife of his brother. This marriage ended in divorce in 1903. Thirdly, he was married on 23 September 1903 to Mabel Johnston, one of his pupils.
