Dewar, James 1793-1846

Violinist, composer and conductor.
From an early age was deputy-leader in the orchestra of the Theatre Royal, Edinburgh and led the orchestra in the time of Sir Walter Scott. Dewar was succeeded as leader by Alexander Mackenzie. Dewar was organist at St George's Episcopal Church from 1815-1835 and a founding member of the Edinburgh Professional Society of Musicians which he also led.
Son of Daniel Dewar, violinist and composer who was a member of Nathaniel Gow's band.
