Reid Orchestra 1935-36
This photograph appeared in the Reid Concert programme, 22 October 1936 and dates 1935-36. It was used to promote the 21st season of the Orchestra which was intended to be celebrated at the end of the season Spring 1937. The celebrations were delayed until the Autumn due to the abdication in December 1936 and the subsequent Coronation activities in May 1937.
The opening concert of the twenty-second season of the Reid Orchestra, on 21st October 1937, was described by Professor Tovey as a 'Coming of Age Celebration'. The event marked the 21st anniversary of the orchestra's first concert in 1917 and was followed by a civic reception in the City Chambers given by the Lord Provost and Edinburgh Corporation. The concert opened with "God Save the King" and in the interval Professor Sir Donald Tovey was presented by Kenneth Anderson, leader of the orchestra speaking on behalf of his colleagues, with a celebratory baton.
