In his first year as Reid Professor of Music, and on the occasion of the 50th anniversary of the introduction of Historical Concerts by Professor Frederick Niecks in 1892, Professor Sidney Newman wrote in the University of Edinburgh Journal of 1942, appealing for funds to maintain the Reid Orchestra established by his predecessor Professor Donald Francis Tovey.
