The Reid Choir
The Reid Choir was established in 1936 by Professor Tovey and was disbanded in 1949 under Professor Newman.
In the 1940s the Reid Choir rehearsed on Monday evenings at 7.30 pm in the Pollock Hall, Marshall Street (near Nicolson Square). The conductor was Professor Sidney Newman. In season 1944-45 the work for rehearsal was Mozart Requiem and there were vacancies for all voices, especially tenors and basses. Applications to the Hon. Secretary, c/o The Reid School of Music, Park Place, Edinburgh.
Extract from the Reid Choir Constitution of July 1936, printed inside the blue membership cards stated:
1. "The Choir ... which shall be associated with the Reid Choir of Music in the University of Edinburgh, shall have as its primary object the study of Choral Music, to be performed under the Conductorship of the Reid Professor of Music for the time being, or a Deputy duly appointed by him. The Reid Professor of Music shall appoint a Deputy Conductor who shall be responsible to him for the training and efficency of the Choir."
3. "All members shall pay an annual subscription of 5/-, which shall become due and payable on the day of the first rehearsal of each season..."
