Edinburgh Choral Union
Notes taken from a pamphlet printed to celebrate the centenary of the Choral Union in 1958.
1958 was also the centenary of the laying of the foundation stone of the Reid School of Music in Park Place.
The Choral Union was established in 1858 by a team led by Mr Charles J Hargitt, organist of St Mary's Roman Catholic Church who thought that Edinburgh deserved to have a large choir, capable of giving performances of great choral works, similar to the Choral Union which had been set up in Glasgow, fourteen years earlier. A meeting was neld in November 1858 at which the Edinburgh Choral Union was set up, members were enrolled, a committee elected and Mr Hargitt was appointed conductor.
