Programme:
28-page booklet
Programme Notes:

Programme notes by Professor Tovey with musical illustrations.

The words of the Stabat Mater by Verdi are printed in full in Latin and in translation, and Professor Tovey acknowledges the translator:  "Professor Richmond has very kindly given me a literal but dignified translation of the poem.  Literalness is absolutely necessary if we are to follow Verdi's very close interpretation, from his first incisive Stabat to his abrupt expiring Amen.  But only a classical scholar can combine it with dignity.  And now let no further comment come between us and the great simple soul of Verdi."

After the interval is printed "A precis of Beethoven's ninth symphony."   Supplementary to the larger analytical essay already issued in connection with the Reid Orchestra, printed in the Reid Concert programme of February 1923.
