Youssef Malouche
Mohamed el Bechir Mokrani
Programme
Music drawn from the classical Tunisian repertory of thirteen nubat (suites).
Each nuba consists of a series of vocal and instrumental items in the same mode but differing metre and tempo.
The malouf repertory is also called 'Andalusian' since popular tradition holds that it originated in the cities and courts of Moslem Spain during the 8th-15th centuries and that it was brought to the north African littoral during the Christian reconquest of Spain.
Tonight's performance also includes some folk pieces and other music of more recent date than the classical nuba.
