Programme notes by Professor Niecks. According to Nieck (p.3), 'Smetana's works did not find during his liftime the atttention to which they had an undoubted claim, at least they did not find it outisde his own country. Only in recent years has his name begun to be more frequently mentioned [...]'

Notes: 

The concert is notable for a relatively early performance of Smetana's string quartet no. 1 in E minor.
