The Well-tempered Clavier or Preludes and Fugues through all the tones and semitones both as regards the tertia major and as concerns the tertia minor.  For the Use and Profit of the Musical Young Desirous of Learning, as well as for the Pastime of those already skilled in this study, drawn up and written by J.S. Bach, Capellmeister to His Serene Highness the Prince of Anhalt-Cöthen etc. and Director of His Chamber Music.

Notes: 

A lecture on the programme "The well-tempered Clavier" was given by Hans Gal at 7 pm in the Laigh Room (a room on the ground floor immediately below the concert room).   All three lectures in the 1977 series are on the same topic.

The lecture was followed by a buffet supper with wine at 7.30 pm  Tickets for the buffet supper, £1.
'Reserved' notices will be available for those attending the lecture to reserve their seats for the recital

Harpsichord maintenance by John Barnes and Grant O'Brien

A recording of the Flemish harpsichord used on May 29, June 5 and 12, is available at the hall (SCH 741)
The French harpsichord used for "The 48" has been recenty restored and heard for the first time at these concerts, having been bought in 1972 with the assistance of the instrument fund of the Friends of St Cecilia's Hall, the National Museums Purchase Fund and the Pilgrim Trust.  Work on it includes a cleaning of the floral decoration on the soundboard.

"Bach at St Cecilia's Hall 1978" will include a recital of piano transcriptions of J.S. Bach (Brahms, Busoni, etc.) played by Peter Evans, solo suites played on the baroque cello (including the violoncello piccolo) by Wouter Möller, the two lute suites played by Nigel North, clavichord works played by Coin Kingsley, harpsichord music played by Lucy Carolan and the "Goldberg Variations" played by Peter Williams.
