All the works in this programme are by Professors of Music at the University of Edinburgh. Composed in 1834 and 1835, the Thomson sonata in four movements and dedicated to Moscheles, has been edited for today's performance from the composer's autographed score in the Reid Library.

General Reid was born 275 years ago on 13 February 1721. John Thomson was Professor of Music at the University of Edinburgh from 1839 to 1841, John Donaldson from 1845 to 1865, Kenneth Leighton from 1970 to 1988.
