Introduction and programme notes by S.T.M.N.

The various factors that determine a season's programme designing have conspired to bring a Schumann Symphony and a Chopin Concerto into that concert in which we must address ourselves to the commemoration of the birthday of General John Reid with the inclusion of some music of his own day - more especially of his own compositions written, as he says himself, about the middle of the eighteenth century.  Since our Reid Concert seasons as a whole now afford no small measure of opportunity for hearing such 'period' programmes, I have conceived the idea of commemorating General Reid this year somewhat after the manner of the first Reid Concert of 1841.  I say advisedly 'somewhat' - for that first concert in the Assembly rooms on Friday 12, February, given with an orchestra of 56 and a choir of 126, was repeated as a public concert the next morning' with the intimation that "As the concert will be the same duration as one of those at a Festival, viz. four hours, the performance is fixed to commence precisely at one o'clock.  And in order to prevent confusion the doors will be opened at half-past eleven."
