Spohr, Louis, 1784-1859

Louis Spohr, b. Brunswick 1784; d. Kassel 1859

German composer, violinist and conductor.

He was an 'ideas man', who wrote double quartets for two string quartets, 'invented' the violin chinrest, and was one of the first to use a baton to conduct an orchestra. His violin concerto no. 8 is unusual for the time in that it consists of a single movement.
