Paine, John Knowles, 1839-1906

American composer, pianist, organist and teacher.  In the words of Kenneth Roberts he was 'the first native American to win acceptance as a composer of large-scale concert music'.

After early study with German musicians in the United States and continued his studies in Berlin.  In 1861 he returned to the USA, settled in Boston and in 1875 was appointed Professor of Music at the University of Harvard, the first full chair of Music in the United States.
