MacMillan, James, 1959-

Sir James MacMillan, Scottish composer, b. Kilwinning in Ayrshire.  Studied at the Universities of Edinburgh and Durham where his teacher was John Casken.  He won the Chandos award at Musica Nova 1979 and first prize at the Festival of Contemporary Church Music in Norwich in 1983.  After working as a lecturer at Manchester University he returned to Scotland where he taught part-time at the Royal Scottish Academy of Music and Drama (now the Royal Conservatoire of Scotland).  In 1990 he was appointed affiliate composer of the Scottish Chamber Orchestra.
