Christian Victor Hely-Hutchinson, b. Cape Town, 1901, d. London 1947

English composer, pianist and administrator (taught piano by Donald Francis Tovey)

Studied at the Royal College of Music under Adrian Boult and Gustav Holst, and also privately under Professor Donald Tovey. He joined the BBC as an accompanist in 1926, and made a name for himself as pianist, composer, conductor, lecturer and programme builder.  He also wrote music for broadcast plays. He left London and went to Birmingham as Music Director of the Midland Region. In 1934 he succeeded Sir Granville Bantock as Peyton Professor of Music at the University of Birmingham.
