Gottschalk, Louis Moreau, 1829-1869

Born in New Orleans of Creole and German Jewish ancestry.  At the age of 12 he went to Paris to study, where Liszt, Chopin and Thalberg reigned supreme and before he was 16 he was the toast of musical Paris.  In 1853 he returned to the Americas.  He spent his last years in South America where he died in Brazil of peritonitis.
