Doherty, Douglas, 1956-

Douglas Doherty was born in Africa and grew up in Nigeria.  He was a student at Cambridgeshire College of Arts and Technology where he studied composition privately with Christopher Brown.  He moved from there to the University of East Anglia, where, under Denis Smalley, his interest in composing electroacoustic music increased.  As a post-graduate he worked for a year at the University of Durham, producing this country's first piece exclusively composed using the MUSIC II computer system.  Since then he has studied at the universities of Newcastle upon Tyne and Birmingham.  In 1989 he was director of Electric Music, an annual festival of electroacoustic music, held in Newcastle.
