Davies, Peter Maxwell, 1934-2016

Peter Maxwell Davies ('Max') was an English composer and conductor, b. Salford 1934; d. Orkney 2016.
He studied music at the Royal Manchester College of Music and Manchester University before travelling to Rome to study composition with Goffredo Petrassi.
He served as Director of Music at Cirencester Grammar School from 1959 to 1962 before continuing his compositionstudies at Princton University with Roger Sessions.
Based in Orkney he was appointed Master of the Queen's Music in 2004.

In 1979 Peter Maxwell Davies was awarded an Honorary Degree in Music by the University of Edinburgh.
