Giovanelli, Ruggiero, c.1560-1625

Giovannelli was born in Velletri, near Rome and was a composer of religious music, popular madrigals and songs.

On Palestrina's death in 1594 he was chosen to replace him as maestro di cappella at the Julian Chapel in St Peter's Basilica in Rome.   Giovanelli held this position until 1599 when he became a singer at the Sistine Chapel where he was appointed maestro di cappella in 1614.
